The primary purpose of the Red Cross Lifeguarding program is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over.  All courses include the following base-level certifications: American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED, Waterpark Skills certification, and Administering Emergency Oxygen (all certs are valid for 2 years).  A rescue mask will be provided as part of the course fee.  Participants will need to obtain an current copy of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Manual, which can be downloaded free of charge from the American Red Cross website or they can bring a tablet/laptop with them to the course (class length is approximately 30.5 hours).

Lifeguarding with CPR / AED for Professional Rescuers and Administering Emergency Oxygen REVIEW COURSE

The Review Course is designed to review the lifeguarding skills and core knowledge points required to re-certify lifeguards holding a current Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certification.  Please note that if the Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certificate is expired, participants must take the full Lifeguarding course (proof of a valid certification is required on the 1st day of class).  The review course is approximately 14 hours in length.  If the participant also holds a current Administering Emergency Oxygen certification, this can be re-certed at the same time as Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED at no additional charge.

** We hired directly from our classes!  Please note anyone hired will be eligible for a $50 refund if the following criteria are met:

  • Successfully complete the interview process at the Cumming Aquatic Center
  • Successfully complete the American Red Cross Lifeguard course, including all pre-test requirements as well as the brick test in 13.5 feet of water (CAC requirement)
  • Complete and pass all application and employment requirements required by the City of Cumming
  • Commit to 10 hours of open availability during facility operation hours in Fall/Winter/Spring and 20 hours of open availability during the Summer months (when the Outdoor Leisure Pool is open)
  • Complete 60 days of employment with the CAC
  • We TRY to hire 16 year olds since our staff must be 16 in order to operate the slide.  However, we have hired 15 year olds in the past and 15 year olds are still welcome to apply (they just cannot operate the slide).
